When my kids were little, my husband and I would always schedule a day together for the purpose of shopping for their Christmas gifts. This was always a special time for us - not only the careful choosing of items that would be fun for them, but also enriching to their lives and education in some way. It was all about making their Christmas morning special. But this traditional shopping day was also fun for us - we'd set a budget that was often stretched a bit, and hit the stores, then fit in lunch out or possibly a movie together. It was nice to have this "date" day with the kids elsewhere, normally with my mother, having their own shenanigans with her and being totally spoiled for the day.
Now that the kids are grown, it's no longer a single day, but this year, my kids and I are planning a similar day without their father, as he's the one they want to shop for, as well as some other last-minute gifts they will be wanting to pick up for friends, etc. I am delighted that I will be included in their shopping trip - probably lunch and possible movie to be tossed in once the shopping is done, in keeping with the old tradition. These times together are what for me, the Christmas season is all about. Forgetting the work, schedules, and stresses for a day and just getting in a little easy time with my children. As they grow up and form their own lives and families, I know these special times will be fewer and farther between. Grabbing these moments while they are still here!
